Towards Health Commodity Security in Kenya

Nairobi Wednesday July12, 2023 Availability and access to quality affordable health products is key to achieving Universal Health Coverage ( UHC),Vision 2030 and Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs).

The Government has made significant progress towards attainment of Maturity Level 3 (ML3) status by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board .The status will improve capacity of the board to regulate medical products in an efficient and effective manner. This will boost local manufacturing and improve commodity security and our export capacity.

USAID has been a key partner on this front, Principal Secretary State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni has today held discussions with Deputy Mission Director USAID -Kenya and East Africa,Mr. Bert Ubamadu to review progress and explore strategies for addressing gaps around Legal Framework, Human Resources and Financial autonomy of PPB to fastrack the process.

The PS noted that the government I'd keen to ensure quality and safety of medicines, vaccines and other medical products and welcomed collaborations to boast local manufacturing.
