Sustainable Health Financing Through Stronger Economic Partnerships
Nairobi, Kenya - - Kenya is strengthening sustainable health financing by linking investment in healthcare to economic growth, productivity and stronger national systems.
Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale joined National Treasury and Economic Planning Cabinet Secretary Hon. John Mbadi and Health and Finance leaders from across the globe for a high-level ministerial dialogue on health co-investment and sustainable healthcare financing.
The dialogue, convened jointly by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the U.S. Department of State, focused on strengthening domestic resource mobilisation, attracting private-sector investment and developing financing models that can support resilient health systems and accelerate Universal Health Coverage.
CS Duale highlighted Kenya’s health financing reforms under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, including the Social Health Authority and its three funds—the Primary Healthcare Fund, Social Health Insurance Fund, and Emergency, Chronic and Critical Illness Fund. The reforms seek to expand access to quality healthcare while reducing the financial burden on households.
He called for greater alignment of health investments with national systems, moving away from fragmented and unpredictable financing towards coordinated, accountable and sustainable approaches that deliver measurable health outcomes.
The CS also underscored the opportunity to mobilise private capital through predictable investment frameworks, including deeper engagement with the U.S. Development Finance Corporation and other strategic partners, alongside stronger domestic co-financing.
Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga attended the session alongside representatives of the U.S. Government, African Union, international financial institutions, Global Fund, development partners and the private sector.
