PS Tum Outlines Four Key Pillars For Delivering Universal Health Coverage In Kenya

Nairobi, Kenya March 29, 2023

The Principal Secretary of the State Department for Medical Services in Kenya, Eng. Peter Tum, attended the American Chamber of Commerce Business Summit to discuss the key priority areas under the Kenya Kwanza Manifesto for Health.
During the Health Sector Forum, Eng. Peter Tum highlighted four pillars that are crucial for the delivery of universal health coverage in Kenya.
Firstly, the government has committed to paying stipends for 90,000 community health workers and recruiting an additional 20,000 healthcare workers to improve service delivery. Secondly, the government aims to realize a social health insurance scheme that will cover all Kenyans, ensuring that no one is left behind.
The third pillar focuses on the digitization ecosystem, with plans to improve the portability of data, interconnectivity of health information, and telemedicine. Finally, the government seeks to lower the cost of healthcare by encouraging local manufacturing and pooled procurement, leveraging economies of scale.
Eng. Peter Tum reiterated the government's commitment to partnering with the private sector to deliver quality healthcare services to all Kenyans. He also encouraged the American government to continue supporting Kenya in healthcare.
The Kenya Kwanza Manifesto for Health aims to provide affordable, accessible, and quality healthcare to all Kenyans, aligning with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals for health.
