Promoting a New Era in Healthcare Workforce Development

Nairobi, Kenya - 11th October 2023 - The official opening of the Pre-National Human Resources for Health Dialogue meeting marked a significant step forward in Kenya's healthcare system.

The event, graced by Nakumicha S. Wafula, Cabinet Secretary for Health, brought together a diverse group of healthcare professionals, signaling the beginning of a series of dialogues aimed at enhancing the development and management of the country's healthcare workforce.

During the event, the cabinet secretary announced that the ministry will not renew the agreement with the Cuban doctors. “Our very own healthcare professionals are committed to the cause,” she said.

Chapter Four of the Kenyan Constitution guarantees the right to the highest attainable standard of health for all citizens, emphasizing the pivotal role of the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Council of Governors and County Governments to ensure the delivery of safe, effective, and quality health services.

Acknowledging the multifaceted challenges facing healthcare workers, including training, welfare, performance management, safety, and mobility, the government places its faith in collaborative efforts to identify pragmatic solutions through ongoing dialogues.

In recognition of the complexity of healthcare policy and the need for a centralized coordinating mechanism, the Kenyan Health Human Resource Advisory Council (KHHRAC) was established under the Health Act of 2017, filling a crucial gap in HRH coordination.

Over the next two days, the dialogue seeks to amplify the voices of health workers, educators, and policymakers, emphasizing the importance of listening and co-creating solutions and setting the stage for the National Dialogue on Human Resources for Health in Kericho, planned for October 18th.

Dignitaries, including Dr. Abdourahmane Diallo, WHO Country Representative, Ms. Mary Muthoni, PS for Public Health and Professional Standards, and Dr. Patrick Amoth, Ag. Director of Health, addressed the delegates.
