Kenya Reaffirms Commitment to Africa’s Health Agenda at African Union Extraordinary Summit

Nairobi, Kenya -  - Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga represented Kenya at the 20th Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) held in Accra, Ghana. He was accompanied by Kenya’s Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Shem Amadi.

Convened under the theme “Advancing Justice, Equity and Universal Health Coverage (UHC): Ending AIDS and TB, Improving Maternal Health, and Addressing Endemic, Non-Communicable and Neglected Tropical Diseases and Conditions in Africa,” the Summit brought together African leaders to accelerate the continent’s health agenda and strengthen collective action towards achieving key health targets by 2030.

The Heads of State and Government deliberated on strategies to end AIDS by 2030, eliminate preventable maternal deaths, address the burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases, tackle neglected tropical diseases and conditions, and strengthen resilient and sustainable health systems capable of delivering equitable, quality healthcare for all.

The high-level Session was attended by President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana, Chairperson of the African Union Commission Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, President of Burundi and Chairperson of the African Union Évariste Ndayishimiye, Heads of State and Government, Ministers, senior government officials and development partners, including the Stop TB Partnership, UNAIDS and the World Health Organization.

Kenya’s participation reaffirmed the country’s commitment to advancing the African Union’s health priorities through Universal Health Coverage, sustainable health financing, disease prevention and control, maternal and child health, health security, and resilient health systems.

The Summit also provided an important platform for Member States and partners to renew political commitment, strengthen collaboration and accelerate implementation of actions aimed at achieving a healthier, more equitable and inclusive Africa by 2030.
