EIB Reaffirms Partnership with Kenya on Health Energy Transition at KNH

Nairobi, Kenya -  - Cabinet Secretary for Health Aden Duale held bilateral talks with a delegation from the European Investment Bank led by Vice President Marek Mora, to deepen alignment on strategic health investments, with a focus on the ongoing energy transition at Kenyatta National Hospital.

The engagement highlighted the growing importance of reliable and sustainable energy in strengthening Kenya’s health system and advancing Universal Health Coverage, by ensuring uninterrupted delivery of essential services and enhancing system resilience.

Discussions centred on the KNH solarisation pilot supported under the EIB City Climate Finance Gap Fund. With feasibility studies complete and implementation underway, the initiative is set to anchor a broader national rollout targeting at least 2,000 priority health facilities.

The programme will deploy standardised solar and battery storage systems, integrate with critical medical equipment, and strengthen maintenance and governance frameworks across national and county levels—improving service continuity, particularly in immunisation and maternal and child health, while reducing operational energy costs and advancing climate resilience.

The Cabinet Secretary sought continued EIB support in financing the rollout, expanding technical assistance for feasibility studies and facility design, and developing innovative financing models to catalyse broader investment in health infrastructure.

The meeting was attended by Ephraim Lemango of UNICEF, Director-General for Health Patrick Amoth, Richard Lesiyampe, and senior Ministry of Health officials.
