Healthcare in Vihiga County is set for a major boost with the construction of an Integrated Maternal, Newborn, Child and Health Complex fully sponsored and equipped by Safaricom through the Mpesa Foundation. The project is designed to help curb maternal and neonatal mortalities by expanding access to quality care for mothers and newborns.
The KSh 60 million investment, assessed by a delegation led by Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale, will house a theatre, newborn unit, kangaroo room, labour ward, delivery room, and postnatal ward. Once completed, the facility will provide improved maternal healthcare services to more than 700,000 residents in Vihiga and neighbouring counties.
During the visit, the Ministryβs delegation also inspected Vihiga County Referral Hospital, which is undergoing major upgrades. A new six-floor Hospital Plaza is under construction and will feature an ICU, renal unit, six theatres, and specialized wards. The development is expected to transform the county into a hub for specialized healthcare, medical training, and research.
Concluding the inspection tour, Hon. Duale held a strategic sensitization caucus with county healthcare providers, where he handed over 608 digital devices to support digital health transformation. The devices will strengthen transparency, accountability, and efficiency in healthcare service delivery.
The CS also announced that Vihiga County will benefit from the National Equipment Services Programme (NESP), which will provide continuous access to advanced medical equipment in radiology, operating theatres, and intensive care units.
βOur mission remains clear β to make Universal Health Coverage (UHC) a reality,β Hon. Duale said. βWith the Social Health Authority (SHA) as the foundation for sustainable healthcare financing, we are determined to deliver quality and equitable healthcare for all Kenyans.β
