Ministry of Health Urges Vigilance Amid Ongoing Heavy Rains, Cites Health Risks

Nairobi, Kenya - 22nd November 2023 - Ms. Mary Muthoni Muriuki, Principal Secretary for the State Department of Public Health and Professional Standards, has urged vigilance amid the ongoing heavy rains, citing associated health risks.

In a public advisory today, she stressed the critical importance of avoiding risky actions like crossing swollen rivers. Ms. Muriuki emphasized strict adherence to sanitation practices, including frequent handwashing, proper waste disposal, and ensuring clean drinking water to prevent contamination.

Highlighting challenges faced by healthcare facilities and disruptions in nutrition due to flooding, Ms. Muriuki underscored the necessity of seeking immediate medical attention for symptoms of waterborne diseases.

To tackle these challenges, she said the Ministry is collaborating closely with county governments and partners to implement a robust response plan focusing on vulnerable areas within the health system.

This includes: Activation of national and County Emergency Operation Centres to ensure prompt responses. Bolstering health facility capacity and addressing vector-borne illnesses through the distribution of essential supplies. Emphasis on preventive health measures, including vaccinations against preventable diseases. Providing technical assistance and supporting county governments through rapid response teams.

The plan aims to address these challenges and implement preventive measures to safeguard public health.
