Ministry of Health Takes Action Against Drug and Alcohol Abuse

Mombasa, Kenya - 26th February 2024 - In response to the pressing issue of drug and alcohol abuse, the Ministry of Health has declared its unwavering commitment to addressing this detrimental problem.

Emphasizing the severe impact on communities, Health Cabinet Secretary Nakhumicha S. Wafula highlighted the urgent need for intervention.

ย "Drug and alcohol abuse not only strains our healthcare system but also results in severe societal consequences," stated CS Nakhumicha during the Coast Region Alcohol and Drug Abuse Conference presided over by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua today.

ย "From teenage pregnancy to sexual and gender-based violations and the spread of HIV/AIDS, the repercussions are devastating." With last year's allocation of a staggering 75 billion for HIV/AIDS management reflecting the severity of the situation, urgent action is imperative.

ย To combat this crisis, CS Nakhumicha, accompanied by PS for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni, Cabinet Secretaries, and senior government officials urged law enforcement officers to collaborate closely with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board ensuring that pharmaceutical premises non-compliant with regulations remain closed.

ย Additionally, community health promoters will be mobilized to identify individuals struggling with substance abuse, enabling targeted interventions.
