Ministry of Health Addresses Vaccine Stock Shortages Across Kenya

Nairobi, Kenya -  23rd May 2024 - The Ministry of Health is taking proactive measures to address vaccine stock shortages affecting health facilities nationwide.

Reports of routine antigen shortages, including key vaccines like the BCG Vaccine, Oral Polio Vaccine, and Measles Rubella Vaccine, have prompted urgent action from health authorities.

With less than two months of stock available for traditional vaccines and low levels for other routine childhood vaccines supported by Gavi, the situation poses a significant risk to public health, particularly for children and vulnerable populations.

In response, Mr. Harry Kimtai, Principal Secretary of the State Department for Medical Services,  says the Ministry is implementing several strategies. This includes tracking vaccine consumption and facilitating redistribution between counties to mitigate stock-out situations, working closely with UNICEF to accelerate the delivery of ordered vaccines, and allocating funds for urgent procurement.

Additionally, mechanisms for transitioning from Gavi support and exploring sustainable financing options for vaccine procurement and program operations are being established.

Despite logistical challenges exacerbated by heavy rains, efforts are underway to fast-track the shipment of vaccines, expected to arrive by the first week of June 2024.

The Ministry underscores the importance of maintaining high immunization coverage and urges caregivers to work closely with healthcare providers during this period of stock challenges.

The commitment remains unwavering to ensure all Kenyans have access to life-saving vaccines and essential immunization services.  In a press statement today Mr. Kimtai, emphasized the Ministry's dedication to addressing vaccine stock challenges and ensuring public health safety across Kenya.
