Lamu County Commences Survey on Elephantiasis Eradication

𝐋𝐚𝐦𝐮, 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚 -  𝟏𝟔𝐭𝐡 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑Today marks the commencement of a significant chapter in Lamu County's quest to eradicate Lymphatic Filariasis (LF), commonly known as elephantiasis. Led by KEMRI_Kenya in partnership with MOH-Kenya and WHO, this study focuses on evaluating the prevalence of LF among adults.

The WHO has been a pillar in LF elimination, providing crucial technical guidance, essential medications for mass campaigns, and distributing bed nets to control disease-carrying mosquitoes. Lamu's progress in LF elimination is evident through successful Mass Drug Administration campaigns.

LF, categorized as a Neglected Tropical Disease, demands countries to maintain parasite prevalence below 1% among the targeted population. This survey signifies Lamu County's commitment to meeting WHO's stringent requirements for disease eradication.
