Kenya Works Towards Transitioning From Gavi Support For National Vaccination Program

Nairobi, Kenya - March 30, 2023

The Kenyan government is actively working towards transitioning from Gavi support for its national vaccination program, as per recent discussions held between PS Medical Services Eng. Peter Tum and Gavi Senior Country Manager, Ms Billie-Jean Nieuwenhuys.
Gavi has been supporting Kenya's national vaccination program since 2001, providing vaccines and related supplies worth approximately $715 million.
However, the Kenyan government is now seeking alternative sources of funding to ensure a sustainable funding model for its national vaccination program. The government aims to accelerate the transition from Gavi support by 2030.
During their meeting, Eng. Peter Tum and Ms Billie-Jean Nieuwenhuys focused on the transition from Gavi support and discussed the development of a new country Gavi full portfolio plan.
The plan will align with the government's priorities to support reaching unvaccinated populations, in line with Kenya's goal of achieving universal health coverage.
“The Ministry of Health is committed to ensuring a smooth transition from Gavi support and is exploring all available options to maintain the continued success of its national vaccination program,” said Eng. Tum. The government aims to provide universal access to vaccines and reach all populations, regardless of their location or socioeconomic status.
Eng. Peter Tum stated, "We are grateful for the support we have received from Gavi over the years. We remain committed to ensuring a smooth transition and exploring all available options to achieve our goal of providing universal access to vaccines."
