Kenya Takes Stride Towards a Malaria-Free Future with National LLINs Distribution Campaign

Nairobi, Kenya - 12th November 2023 - In an unwavering commitment to combat malaria, the Ministry of Health has announced the launch of the National Long-Lasting Insecticidal Treated Nets (LLINs) Distribution Campaign, scheduled to commence on November 15, 2023 in Homabay county.

In a press release today, Ms. Mary Muthoni, the Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, stated that to sustain progress and contribute to effective malaria vector control, the Ministry of Health, through the Division of National Malaria Control, plans to conduct a mass LLIN campaign in 22 high malaria-burden counties.

The ambitious goal is to distribute 15.3 million Long Lasting Insecticidal Treated Nets (ITNs) to approximately 23 million people. This campaign represents a pivotal step toward universal coverage of nets and a significant milestone in Kenya's ongoing battle against malaria. Aligned with the Kenya Malaria Strategy 2019-2023, the campaign aims to reduce the burden of malaria to at least 75% of 2016 levels by 2023, aspiring for a malaria-free Kenya.

The core objective is to provide essential protection to vulnerable populations, ensuring every household in high-risk malaria regions has access to LLINs. Previous distributions of LLINs have shown substantial progress in the fight against malaria, reflected in a noteworthy drop in national malaria prevalence from 8% to 6% between 2015 and 2020.
