Kenya Reaffirms Commitment to Universal Health Coverage at Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND - Health Cabinet Secretary Nakhumicha S. Wafula reaffirmed Kenya's commitment to achieving universal health coverage (UHC) by 2030 at the 36th Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting (CHMM). 

 Emphasizing the need for global and regional partnerships, especially for small and vulnerable states, Nakhumicha addressed this year's theme: “Actionable Solutions to Building Resilience in Healthcare Systems within the Commonwealth.” 

 The CS highlighted the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on health inequalities, urging collaborative efforts to meet UHC goals aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 

She proposed a customized Commonwealth tracker for UHC to monitor progress effectively.

In addressing climate change, Nakhumicha stressed the importance of resilient health systems and advocated for investments in renewable energy. 

She underscored how climate change affects health determinants such as clean air, water, food, and shelter.

Under President William Ruto’s leadership, Kenya is advocating for global coalitions to combat greenhouse gas emissions. 

The CS reiterated the significance of transitioning to renewable energy and implementing adaptation strategies.

During the meeting, discussions also centered on primary health care investment, digital health technologies, mental health integration, and pandemic preparedness. 

The CS also highlighted Kenya’s efforts to enhance primary healthcare and leverage digital innovations to achieve UHC.
