Kenya Marked As a Medical Tourism Destination In The Region

Nairobi,  ,2023 Kenya's efforts towards health system strengthening and significant progress towards Universal Health Coverage has positioned the country as a medical tourism destination in Africa.

Principal Secretary,State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni Muriuki has  hosted a delegation from the office of the President and Cabinet of the Republic of Malawi on their study and learning visit to Kenya.The delegation led by the Acting Clerk to Cabinet, Mr. Samson Ngurwa sought to learn about the National Health Insurance Scheme(NHIF) and hospital referral networks.

In a joint meeting with a team from the State Department for Medical Services, PS Muthoni also highlighted Kenya's robust regulatory framework governing the healthcare sector that ensures patient safety,ethical practices and quality standards .

Kenya boasts of Internationally accredited hospitals such as Kenyatta National Hospital,Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral and Research Hospital,Aga Khan Hospital,the Nairobi Hospital and Amref Flying Doctors.

There is also an array of specialised Centres of Excellence:KUTRRH cyclon machine for cancer management and AKUH coronary centre of excellence.

Operationalization of the East Africa Kidney Institute is also in the final stages.This is going to be a Centre of Excellence for training on treatment and management of kidney problems in the region.

The PS welcomed Malawi's interest in exploring Medial tourism in Kenya and affirmed the government's commitment to further collaborations to improve healthcare services in the region.
