Kenya Makes Strides in Primary Health Care Network Implementation

Nairobi, Kenya - 20th June 2024 -  In a significant development towards enhancing healthcare accessibility and delivery across the nation, Kenya's Ministry of Health has reported substantial progress in establishing Primary Health Care Networks (PCNs). 

These networks, aimed at bolstering the country's healthcare infrastructure, are pivotal in achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and ensuring comprehensive health services reach every corner of the country. 

In a press statement today, Mary Muthoni Muriuki, Principal Secretary for the State Department of Public Health and Professional Standards said the initiative has seen the successful establishment of 160 PCNs, with an additional 41 currently in progress. 

This milestone marks a notable achievement, covering 87% of Kenya's counties and contributing to improved healthcare outcomes. PCNs play a critical role in integrating various levels of healthcare delivery and coordinating multidisciplinary health teams. This approach has resulted in increased outreach, improved disease screening, enhanced patient referrals, and better coordination among healthcare providers. 

These efforts have significantly boosted healthcare access and quality in regions like Garissa, where Family Planning Integration Coverage rose from 66% to 87%, and skilled deliveries increased from 77% to 98%. The Ministry has also focused on capacity building, training 248 Master Trainers to support county-level PCN implementation. 

Innovative strategies such as the use of drones for medical supply distribution in Kisumu and household obstetric ultrasound assessments in Kwale have further revolutionized healthcare delivery, particularly in remote areas. The establishment of a National PCN observatory and adoption of an electronic community health information system (e-CHIS) underscore Kenya's commitment to transparency and data-driven decision-making in healthcare management. 

These systems facilitate real-time tracking and monitoring of PCN operations, ensuring efficient resource allocation and quality service delivery. Muthoni emphasized the transformative impact of Primary Health Care on health equity and economic productivity. She urged continued support and participation in primary healthcare initiatives to build a resilient healthcare system that promotes the well-being of all Kenyan citizens.
