Health CS Nakhumicha Visits Lugulu Mission Hospital, Initiates NHIF Arrears Payment

Bungoma, Kenya- 2nd January 2024 - In her dedication to advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC), Health CS Nakhumicha S. Wafula embarked on her healthcare reform agenda for the new year with a visit to Lugulu Mission Hospital, a century-old medical institution.

ย During her visit, CS Nakhumicha highlighted the importance of the Social Health Insurance Act, 2023, emphasizing how this legislation would revolutionize health financing, particularly benefiting underprivileged patients who rely on Lugulu Mission Hospital for medical care.

ย The hospital, owed Kshs 10 million by the now-defunct NHIF, received a payment of Kshs 3.4 million today, thanks to Nakhumicha's intervention.

ย An additional Kshs 6.6 million is set to be settled before the week's end, alleviating financial strain and aiding in clearing unpaid staff salaries.

Nakhumicha expressed hope that this initiative would brighten the festive season for those who faced hardships during Christmas due to delayed payments.

ย Amidst the event, the Health CS commended the efforts of Community Health Promoters (CHPs) nationwide, assuring that Kshs 1 billion has been allocated for their remuneration, a move aimed at recognizing their pivotal role in advancing UHC

Nakhumicha also emphasized that primary care networks (PCNs) extend beyond physical structures, representing a commitment to comprehensive healthcare, connecting community dispensaries, health centers, and hospitals.

ย The CS was joined by Amb. Jack Tumwa, Chairman of the Board of Management, reaffirming his commitment to instigating essential reforms to restore the institution's past excellence in serving the Church and the community.

Other dignitaries included acting CEO/Administrator Grace Khayota, Bungoma County's CECM for Health and Sanitation Andrew Wamalwa, Webuye East MP Martin Wanyonyi, and Senators David Wakoli and Catharine Wambilianga.
