Government Commissions 150-Bed Hospital for Correctional Services
The Government has commissioned the 150-bed Wanini Kireri Magereza Level IV Hospital at the Kenya Prisons Staff Training College in Ruiru, expanding access to quality healthcare for correctional services officers, inmates and surrounding communities.
Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga joined Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki for the commissioning of the hospital, which began operations in March following the launch of outpatient services.
The facility provides inpatient and outpatient care, emergency treatment, maternal and child health services, diagnostics, laboratory and pharmacy services, renal care and specialised clinics. It is equipped with an Intensive Care Unit, High Dependency Unit, radiology and dental units, maternity wing, male and female wards and a paediatric ward.
The hospital’s operationalisation fulfils a Presidential directive issued during the Kenya Prisons Service recruits’ pass-out parade in February. It strengthens the correctional system’s capacity to provide timely diagnosis and treatment while reducing reliance on referrals to external health facilities.
The facility has also been integrated into the Social Health Authority’s Usalama Cover Public Officers Medical Scheme. This enables eligible officers and their dependants to access outpatient, inpatient, maternity, specialised and emergency evacuation services.
The investment advances the Government’s Universal Health Coverage agenda under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda by expanding access to affordable, quality healthcare within the disciplined services and the wider community.
Also present were Interior Cabinet Secretary Hon. Kipchumba Murkomen; Principal Secretary for Interior Dr. Raymond Omolo; Principal Secretary for Correctional Services Dr. Salome Beaco; Principal Secretary for Parliamentary Affairs Ms. Aurelia Rono; and Commissioner General of Prisons Mr. Patrick M. Aranduh, alongside senior Ministry of Health officials and Kenya Prisons Service staff.
