Enhancing Resilience: Training for Cholera Preparedness Amidst El Nino Threats

Nairobi, 13th October 2023 - In preparation for El Nino’s potential impact, the Ministry of Health, with support from WHO, is conducting an intensive 5-day training program on cholera and general microbiology for 24 laboratory officers.

These officers are drawn from 12 counties, predominantly representing Western, Nyanza, Central, and Eastern regions of Kenya. This proactive step aligns with the advice provided by the Meteorology Department, urging various sectors to develop contingency plans for the anticipated heavy rains.

The WHO, in tandem with this training effort, has strategically positioned essential diagnostics, medications, and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) supplies in high-risk counties. Moreover, WHO is committed to continually enhancing the skills of healthcare workers, empowering them to efficiently detect, investigate, and respond to potential disease outbreaks.
