Empowering Health Through Local Manufacturing: A Path to UHC

Nairobi, Kenya - 26th January 2024 - In a significant stride towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC), the State Department for Medical Service is diligently crafting a strategy outlined in BETA.

Spearheaded by Mr. Harry Kimtai, Principal Secretary of the department, a consultative meeting with local health product manufacturers and stakeholders on January 26, 2024 marks a pivotal moment in Kenya's healthcare evolution.

ย Central to this initiative is the Ministry's steadfast commitment to producing a minimum of 50% of health products and technologies listed in the Kenya Essential Medicines List locally by 2026.

ย Mr. Kimtai underscored the Ministry's dedication to achieving self-reliance in health products and technologies at an accelerated pace. This commitment involves addressing challenges raised by local manufacturers through meticulously aligned policies and enticing financial incentives.

ย โ€œWe need to get the facts right by validating preexisting information on gaps and the interventions in progress,โ€ emphasized the Principal Secretary.

He urged the participants to join on this transformative journey with us as we pave the way for self-sufficiency and improved healthcare access.
