CS Nakhumicha Launches Vital 2023 Kenya Health Facility Census Report

Nairobi, Kenya - 21st December 2023 - on Thursday, Health Cabinet Secretary Nakhumicha S. Wafula officially launched the 2023 Kenya Health Facility Census Report. Conducted in collaboration with both government levels, the private sector, and faith-based organizations, with support from various development partners, this initiative took place in August 2023.

Its primary aim was to establish a comprehensive baseline for service availability, health facility readiness, human resources, and infrastructure across the nation's healthcare facilities.

ย The government's commitment to Universal Health Coverage (UHC) through Primary Health Care highlighted the importance of understanding health facility readiness and quality of care for effective UHC implementation. Consequently, the census focused on objectively assessing the functionality of health systems at the facility level.

ย This report provides crucial information on health facility services' availability and their adherence to required quality standards. Access to quality health services is instrumental in achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and aligning with health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). "The gathered data will significantly contribute to health sector reviews and evidence-based decision-making processes to strengthen the country's health services," said the CS.

Accompanied by Principal Secretaries Mary Muthoni and Harry Kimtai, alongside General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, ย Nakhumicha emphasized the crucial link between a nation's state and its citizens' health, acknowledging Kenya's healthcare sector progress while recognizing the existing challenges.

The administration's commitment to ensuring health for all Kenyans and achieving SDGs by 2030 remains a top priority.

Highlighting the economic vulnerability posed by high healthcare costs, the Health CS stressed that achieving Universal Health Coverage remains a cornerstone of Kenya's strategy for sustained economic development.

ย The CS underscored the urgent need for stakeholders to converge towards improving the healthcare delivery system. Through collaboration with County Governments, the Ministry of Health aims to address healthcare needs, particularly among marginalized groups, by bolstering primary healthcare services, reducing out-of-pocket expenses, and strengthening the healthcare delivery system.

ย CS Nakhumicha commended innovative partnerships between public and private sectors, recognizing their role in improving Kenya's healthcare outcomes and emphasizing the significance of sustaining a focus on healthcare excellence for global welfare.

ย The Health Facility Census 2023 findings will guide planning, policy formulation, and healthcare sector programming. Identifying gaps will inform targeted investments, ensuring optimal delivery of quality healthcare and advancing Kenya's journey towards Universal Health Coverage.
