PS Muthoni Leads Launch of "EPUKA UCHAFU, AFYA NYUMBANI” Initiative in West Pokot
Kapenguria , 2024 In response to Kenya’s growing waste management crisis and sanitation challenges, Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, launched the “Epuka Uchafu, Afya Nyumbani” initiative in West Pokot. This initiative represents a crucial step in Kenya's mission to enhance cleanliness and public health.
With Kenya generating approximately 22,000 tonnes of waste daily, only 10% is properly managed, and 7.3% of households still lack basic sanitation facilities. The new initiative focuses on empowering communities to create sustainable, locally-driven solutions for waste management and sanitation.
PS Muthoni highlighted the critical role of community involvement, stating, “This initiative is about more than waste management; it's about ensuring a healthier, safer future for all Kenyans by empowering communities to take charge of their environment and well-being.”
