Kenya Strengthens Nursing and Midwifery Leadership to Advance Universal Health Coverage
Geneva ,2026 Kenya is integrating nurses and midwives into health policy, governance, and decision-making structures to accelerate progress toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
At a high-level session on “Strategic Leadership for Nurses and Midwives: A Policy Pathway to Stronger Health Systems” on the margins of the ongoing 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva, we emphasised the critical role nurses play in clinical and operational decisions daily underscoring the need to empower them not only as caregivers, but also as leaders, policy influencers, and managers within the health system.
We highlighted Kenya’s ongoing efforts to strengthen nursing and midwifery leadership through dedicated government structures, inclusion of nursing leaders in policy platforms, and promotion of leadership pathways at national, county, and facility levels.
The meeting hosted by the International Council of Nurses brought together global health leaders, nursing organizations, policymakers, and development partners to advance nursing and midwifery leadership as a key pillar in strengthening health systems globally.
