๐๐๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฌ๐, ๐๐๐ง๐ฒ๐ -๐๐๐ญ๐ก ๐๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐๐๐๐ - The Ministry of Health hasย ย achieved a key milestone in Kenyaโs health digitization journey with the activation of the Health Management Information System (HMIS) at Balambala Sub-County Hospital in Garissa County. The launch coincided with the conclusion of a three-day free medical and surgical camp in the region.
Balambala Sub-County Hospital is now the first rural Sub-County facility to be fully digitized, reinforcing the countryโs commitment to scale up technology-enabled health systems across all counties, irrespective of community disparities.
Aligned with the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda, the Ministry has equipped the hospital with 40 digital devices and trained 35 healthcare workers to accelerate the rollout of digital systems. This reform will enable healthcare providers to securely access patient records, strengthen care coordination, minimize medical errors, and eliminate quack practices within the sector.
Presiding over the camp, Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale also toured the refurbished and expanded Level 4 facility, which is expected to greatly improve access to healthcare for rural communities.
The medical camp also advanced Kenyaโs health financing reforms through the Social Health Authority (SHA). To date, 1,786 residents have been registered under SHA, representing 19% of Garissa Countyโs 171,730 population. Additionally, 1,994 patients received services during the camp, including medical consultations, wellness check-ups, and health education.
The Free Medical and Surgical Camp was organized by the Garissa County Government in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders to expand access to quality healthcare services.
Hon. Duale was hosted by Governor H.E. Nadhif Jama, Senator Abdul Haji, and Members of Parliament Hon. Abdi Shurie (Balambala), Hon. Sala Yakub (Fafi), and Maj. Rtd. Dekow Barrow (Garissa Town), among others.
