Kenya Builds on Success to Further Optimize Primary Health Care

Nairobi , 2025 Building on major gains in community health, the Ministry of Health in collaboration with Amref Health Africa in Kenya and other development partners is moving to further optimize primary health care through the Primary Health Care Optimization Initiative. So far, 8.8 million households have been registered on the electronic Community Health Information System, with millions screened for diabetes, hypertension, maternal, and child health conditions. In addition, 228 Primary Care Networks are now established across all 47 counties.

Speaking during a working session bringing together the Ministry of Health,Amref Health Africa and Primary Healthcare Optimization Team,Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, said the initiative aims to shift Kenya’s health system from dependency to sustainability, anchored on recent legislation including the Social Health Authority Act, Primary Health Care Act, Facility Improvement Financing Act, and Digital Health Act.

By 2028, she added, Kenya envisions a prevention-first, people-centred, and financially sustainable health system, with communities as active partners in their health.
