Hon. Aden Duale Launches AI-Powered CT Scanner and SHA Partnership at Nairobi Hospital
Nairobi, - The Cabinet Secretary for Health, Hon. Aden Duale, EGH, commissioned East Africa’s first 256-slice CT scanner at The Nairobi Hospital, marking a major advancement in diagnostic imaging and patient care. This AI-powered technology offers fast, precise imaging with lower radiation, benefiting specialties like cardiology, oncology, pediatrics, neurology, trauma, and orthopedics, positioning Kenya as a medical innovation leader in Africa.
Hon. Duale emphasized the partnership between the Ministry of Health, Social Health Authority (SHA), and The Nairobi Hospital as a bold step toward Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage goals. Under this collaboration, eligible SHA patients will access subsidized oncology and renal services, including brachytherapy, radio-iodine therapy, conformal radiotherapy, haemodialysis, and kidney transplantation.
Highlighting that over 11,000 Kenyans spent KES 14.7 billion on treatment abroad in 2024, he stressed the need to expand local non-communicable disease care capacity. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to health workforce stability by allocating budget resources to clear arrears and fully implement Return-to-Work Agreements to end disruptive strikes.
Hon. Duale urged constructive dialogue to strengthen service delivery and praised The Nairobi Hospital for combining innovation with equity by extending advanced care access to SHA patients, calling it a symbol of compassion and national unity.
The event was attended by Dr. Ouma Oluga, Principal Secretary for Medical Services; Dr. Patrick Amoth, Director General for Health; Mr. Felix Osano, CEO of The Nairobi Hospital; Dr. Barcley Onyambu, Chair of Kenya Hospital Association; hospital board members; and representatives from the medical community, development partners, and private sector.
