CS Duale Hosts Gavi Delegation, Proposes Framework for Sustainable Immunization Financing

Nairobi, Kenya -  - Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale  hosted a high-level delegation from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, led by Country Director Mr. Thabani Maphosa, for discussions on strengthening Kenya’s immunization efforts and accelerating progress toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

The meeting, held at Afya House, focused on aligning Kenya’s health priorities with Gavi’s support, particularly through enhanced immunization programs and improved healthcare delivery. CS Duale highlighted the government’s efforts to strengthen domestic resource mobilization through the Social Health Authority to ensure continued access to essential health services.

To safeguard the immunization gains made over the years, the CS proposed a new framework that demonstrates the government’s commitment to the health of Kenyan children and its partnership with Gavi. He recommended that Kenya be reverted to the Preparatory Financing Phase, with a gradual increase in co-financing obligations extended up to 2035—allowing the country to transition sustainably towards full financing of its public health and immunization programmes.

Acknowledging Gavi’s longstanding partnership with Kenya, Hon. Duale assured the delegation of the Ministry’s commitment to transparency, integrity, and effective management of all partner resources.

In response, Gavi reaffirmed its support to Kenya and announced an extension of the co-financing transition period from 5 to 8 years. The move is aimed at providing the country with more fiscal space to strengthen its health systems.

CS Duale further committed to establishing a dedicated Programme Coordinating Unit within the Ministry to facilitate and enhance Gavi’s support going forward.

The meeting was attended by the Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga, Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, and other senior Ministry officials.
