Nairobi, Kenya - 14 September 2023 - Teams from The Ministry of Health and World Health Organization (WHO) are currently conducting an assessment of the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene/Infection Prevention and Control (WASH/IPC) conditions within healthcare facilities in Moyale sub-county.ย

ย The primary objective of this assessment is to uncover gaps, challenges, and viable solutions for the prevention and management of Cholera infections.
In tandem with the assessment, these teams are actively monitoring and testing the quality of water in areas affected by Cholera outbreaks to precisely identify potential sources of contamination.ย

ย Additionally, they are collaborating closely with cross-border coordination teams and local stakeholders to address the issue of improper waste disposal near water sources along the Kenya-Ethiopia border.ย

ย As part of their mission, the teams paid a visit to Hilo Mines, situated approximately 70 kilometers from Moyale. This settlement, home to 20,000 residents, faces critical issues such as water scarcity and sanitation challenges.ย

The region grapples with concerns such as open defecation practices, inaccessible roads, accidents resulting from uncovered dug holes, snakebites, and a heightened risk of communicable diseases.
