𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚 & 𝐖𝐇𝐎 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐬 𝐄𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐚 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐨𝐲𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐀𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐥 𝐍𝐢ñ𝐨 𝐑𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬

Nairobi, Kenya - 14 September 2023 - Teams from The Ministry of Health and World Health Organization (WHO) are currently conducting an assessment of the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene/Infection Prevention and Control (WASH/IPC) conditions within healthcare facilities in Moyale sub-county. 

 

 The primary objective of this assessment is to uncover gaps, challenges, and viable solutions for the prevention and management of Cholera infections.

In tandem with the assessment, these teams are actively monitoring and testing the quality of water in areas affected by Cholera outbreaks to precisely identify potential sources of contamination. 

 

 Additionally, they are collaborating closely with cross-border coordination teams and local stakeholders to address the issue of improper waste disposal near water sources along the Kenya-Ethiopia border. 

 

 As part of their mission, the teams paid a visit to Hilo Mines, situated approximately 70 kilometers from Moyale. This settlement, home to 20,000 residents, faces critical issues such as water scarcity and sanitation challenges. 

 

The region grapples with concerns such as open defecation practices, inaccessible roads, accidents resulting from uncovered dug holes, snakebites, and a heightened risk of communicable diseases.

This endeavor plays a pivotal role in our preparations for the expected El Niño rains and their potential consequences.
